Danemead campsite, which is owned
and run jointly by Barnet, Chingford, Enfield and Haringey Scout Districts, is 35 acres of ancient woodland,
mostly birch with some oak, beech and hornbeam. The timber varies in density, and on the eastern side is a
bracken-covered slope. All the buildings are in one quarter of the site, so that campers can for a short walk,
enjoy relative seclusion, even imagine themselves in a wilderness. The site is ideally suited to traditional
camping, as tents are pitched on clearings in the forest.
There is an abundance of natural materials for those wishing to hone their backwoodsman’s skills by building wood fires, bivouacs etc.
Uncle Tom's Cabin c.1970
Uncle Toms Cabin can comfortably accommodate 29 people and includes a Troop Room and fully equipped kitchen.
Our open air chapel has recently been refurbished. Danemead water is as clear as a mountain stream, as it comes from our own artesian well.
At weekends the site is run by the duty wardens and their service teams. The Providore has sweets, drinks, badges and a payphone.
Danemead is 2˝ miles from Broxbourne Station, which is 25 minutes from Central London. Water activities can be enjoyed at two nearby
centres: The Young Mariners Water Activity Centre and ESSA, the Enfield Scout Sailing Association.
Danemead is open from March to December and welcomes all Scouts, Guides, recognised youth groups or educational
organisations to the site to enjoy camping and outdoor activities in the beautiful Hertfordshire countryside.
